Pages Critique
The cover page of the January 26, 2010 issue seemed a bit confusing. The photo takes up alot of the page and then there seems to be no real article on it except for the cutline below the photo. So it was kind of misleading. It is nice to show that Washington has planned to help Haiti. Also the column on the right side was bothering to my eyes. The titles of the two articles were not placed that nicely. “Horizontal shapes are pleasing to the eye. And they often create the illusion that stories are shorter than they really are.” (Harrower 49.) Maybe it would have been better to make them horiztonal on the page instead of vertical.
In the March 2, 2010 issue of The Hatchet on page 8 of the A&E section; it could have used some work. One thing that particularly bothered me was that there was no cut off rule abouve the Bandapoolza article. Without it, it seems to blend into the talent show article. Also for the article on Max Lerch; I think they could have found a better picture of just Max since the article is just about him. Also, since Chaterjee was already displayed on the front cover and in plenty of other photos in past issues. The photo is also very blurry. “There’s nothing like a photograph to give a newspaper motion and emotion” (Harrower 28). On a postive note, I love the photo of Riva at the top of the page. It’s flattering and gives the page dimension.

The Glitch Games by John Crumpacker.
What - luger’s death. When - hours before the Opening Ceremonies on Feb. 12. Who - Nodar Kumaritashvili. Where – Whistler Sliding Center. Why /How – horrible training accident.
At least 42 killed in mudslides, flooding by Armando Franca and Harold Heckle.
What - 42 people killed in mudslides and flooding. When - Sunday, Feb 21. Who - Victims and rescue workers in Madeira. Where – Potrugal. Why /How – The worst storm to hit Madeira since 1993 lashed the south of the island, including the capital, Funchal, Saturday, turning some streets into torrents of mud, water and rolling debris.
So the title is pretty much that hook in how it sates on who was killed and how. There is also a photo that shows resue workers trying to search for victims in the mud.

Mid Year.
From Journalism I’ve learned how to write for the newspaper, meaning I’m used to just writing essays and stuff for my blog. But writing for a newspaper, I definitely got the feel of the style and type of writing an article should be. I’m not in the photo section of The Hatchet but I did learn about how a photo should look and how to edit it. Being on The Hatchet also has made me aware of what is going on around school. What I learned from this semester has met my expectations.
This semester went very well. I’ve written some great articles. People do read what I have to say or show and they get excited, inspired, and follow what I say. I’ve even had someone quote back to me what I wrote one time! Someone said it earlier today in class but being on The Hatchet does make you feel important.
For this next semester, I hope to somehow make more non-opinion fashion pieces even though it might be hard. Like my last article about Alyssa Bird. People like her aren’t easy to find though, especially in the Bay area. I think more people enjoyed that than my opinion pieces, even though I think they’re not that opinionated. I think I’ll try to get more involved with the fashion community and write some more great articles.

This is a GINGHAM print shirt!
Also a classic piece.
I am slightly asahmed that people don’t know what a chino pant is.
Very well, here is the article.
And its supposed to be called EVERYTHING THAT GLITTERS, btw.
My editor changed the name of my article without asking me. >:/
